Modacare 400 mg

Modacare 400 mg is an effective and safe wakefulness medication that works for several sleep disorders like Sleep apnea, Shift Worker Sleep Disorder and Narcolepsy. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine inhibitors. It is usually taken once in a day in the morning for Narcolepsy and Sleep Apnea. For Shift Worker Sleep Disorder, the medication is taken one hour before the shift begins. 

MECHANISM OF ACTION 

Modafinil, the active ingredient in Modacare 400 mg, is known to be a weak inhibitor of dopamine reuptake. On ingestion of modafinil, there are elevated levels of norepinephrine and 5-HT in the prefrontal cortex and hypothalamus. It also increases the signaling of hypothalamic orexin and histamine neurotransmitter pathways. All of this results in wakefulness during the day.

DOSAGE 

The drug is generally consumed orally once each day in the morning for those with Narcolepsy and Shift Worker Sleep Disorder, or about an hour prior to commencing a work shift for individuals dealing with Shift Work Sleep Disorder. It is crucial to use this medication solely under the guidance of a healthcare professional. 

SIDE EFFECTS 

Modacare 400 mg is generally a well-tolerated. The most commonly reported (less than 10% of the users)  side effects of Modafinil are headache, nausea and decreased appetite.  Other commonly reported side effects (5% to 10% of users) include anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, diarrhea and rhinitis. A few cases of serious adverse effects like Steven-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms have been reported in postmarketing surveillance.

Modafinil may decrease the serum concentration of certain drugs like:

• Antihepaciviral combination products

• Clarithromycin
• Clozapine
• Cyclosporine
• Estrogen Derivatives
• Guanfacine
• Lurasidone
• Nimodipine
• Opioid medications (eg, codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone)
• Ranolazine
• Zolpidem

Modafinil may increase the serum concentration of the following medications:

• Diazepam 
• Omeprazole
• Phenytoin

• Although it encourages wakefulness, some individuals may continue to experience diminished alertness. Caution is recommended until individual reactions are established, especially for those with lingering drowsiness.
• If a dose is overlooked and it’s too near bedtime, it should typically be omitted instead of taken late, to prevent disturbing nighttime rest.

Cautions

• Rare hypersensitivity responses can involve fever, rash, and organ involvement (e.g., liver, blood). Seek medical assistance if symptoms such as fever, swelling, or unusual bruising arise.
• Modafinil has been linked to rare but severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Any rash should be reported to a health professional immediately, and the medication should generally be ceased at the first indication of a rash.
• May induce or exacerbate anxiety, mania, hallucinations, suicidal ideation, aggression, or other mood/behavior alterations, particularly in individuals with a history of mental health issues.
• May lead to elevated heart rate and blood pressure; caution is advised in patients with a history of heart conditions, arrhythmias, recent myocardial infarction, or left ventricular hypertrophy.
